A boy riding his bike along a long path beside the Keta Slave Fort in Africa. As I stood on the second floor of the fort looking down and around the area below, I saw this little boy emerged on his bike and I thought the scene said a lot. Though it not shown in the picture, the path stretched all the way around in front of the long and large body of water. When looking at the scene, it symbolized the long journey traveled by captured people across the water to their different destinations from the fort. It in general symbolized the long journey of life people travel never knowing when or if we will make it to our end goal or destination.
Sunrise over Daytona Beach, Florida.
I visited Daytona beach on a trip with the marching band that I was a part in college (The NCCU Marching Sound Machine). I took this picture from the balcony of my hotel room as the sun began to rise.
Ghanaian women dancing at the "Welcome to Ghana" dinner. This was taken on my study-abroad trip with Duke University the Summer of 2014. Dance is a part of almost everything in Ghana. This was captured at a welcome dinner that was being held for us on one of our first nights in Ghana. It is included in my portfolio because it is a great up close and personal photo of people in action. I captured their facial expression of happiness and their body language of love.
A waterfall in Africa. This beautiful waterfall was reached after hiking through the woods in Africa. It was a beautiful and unexpected site. It was taken the summer of 2014 on a study-abroad trip I took with Duke University. I included it in my portfolio because it looks amazing and the colors stand out around the fall of the water.
The National House of Representatives. This photo was taken during the Fall of 2014. I was visiting Washington D.C. with my History Major department. As we walked through the area I noticed how picturesque the scene looked so I stopped to get the shot. I was left behind by my peers but it was worth the shot. I included this photo because it looks so planned and edited but it is a raw shot. I also included it because when online looking at images of the house, I have not seen one taken from this angle.
The Eiffel Tower lighting the night. I love this image of the Eiffel Tower because while it is beautiful during the day, it is absolutely breath-taking at night and this is why I chose to include it in my portfolio. Once the night comes and the tower lights are turned on, it lights the whole sky and area around it. It also seemed to be floating in the night air, above the streets and cars below it.
The Canterbury Cathedral. This was taken the Summer of 2013. I was intrigued to be at the Canterbury Cathedral in Kent because I had read Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" in high school the year before. The cathedral was beautiful, inside and out. It looked to me to be an old building that no one could still enter from the outside. The architecture of the building is amazing and caught my eye immediately so I stopped to capture the image. I believe this is a rare visit for most people so that is why I included it in my portfolio.
Duke Gardens, Durham NC. This was taken during the Fall of 2013. I had just gotten my car and I would leave campus and go read at Duke Gardens. This particular time I decided to bring my camera with me. The scene screamed the season of Spring/Fall to me. I chose to include it in my portfolio because it is a good nature shot.
An Illusionist man on the streets of London. This was taken the Summer of 2013. I was totally amazed by the magic captured in this photo. I stood and stared at him among other illusionist on the street and I could not figure out just how he was positioned like that and not falling over. This is a fun photo and that is why I chose to include it on my portfolio.
Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee. This was taken during the Fall of 2014 when I was in Memphis to present at the 2014 ASALH conference. This motel, now museum, is where Dr. Martin Luther King spent the last moments of his life. I think this is an important historical photo and that is why I chose to include it in my portfolio.
Cooking in Ghana. This was taken the Summer of 2014 on one of my last days in Ghana. We got to cook a dinner for and with Ghanaians. I was up on a porch looking down at one of my peers and two Ghanaian women as they watched the food cook. The food cooking as well as the colors of the food and women's clothing caught my eye and that is why I chose to include it in my portfolio.
Water splashing rocks in Africa. This image was taken in the Summer of 2103 while studying abroad at Keta Slave Fort. I captured this so very far away from the actual scene. I was on the second level of the slave fort when I noticed the water constantly splashing the rocks in front of the tide. I did not think I would be able to capture it but I tried anyhow and got it on the first try. My deceased grandfather had once told me around the time he was passing away, that I was "beautiful like water splashing rocks at the beach." This spoke to me and that is why I included it in my portfolio.
Boats and palm trees on the Gold Coast of West Africa. This was taken during my study-abroad trip to Ghana. I was up on or in the slave castle looking over the side when I saw the boats sitting so perfectly on the sand. I like the image because it says a lot. The boats are currently in use for fishing purposes but if you think of the past and where the boats are located, your mind might formulate a different story. I wondered how the captured people held in the dark chambers of the castle felt once they were outside with this beautiful scene around them but such negative connotations of the moment due to the circumstances of them even being on the coast in this castle. I chose to include it to see if the viewers of my portfolio could formulate their own story and also envision and understand mine.
Dover Castle in Kent, UK. This was taken after I got on the bus from viewing the inside of the medieval castle in the Summer of 2013. It is so clear that it seemed to be taken outside the bus. I chose to capture the scene because the castle through the green nature reminded me of something I envisioned reading a book like "Little House on the Prairie." That paired with how clear the image is, is why I chose to include it on my portfolio.
A light pole from my window at the Hyatt Hotel in Jacksonville Florida. This image was taken in the Fall of 2013 when I attended the conference for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). I was in the room waiting to present my research paper and I looked out the window and noticed the shadow of the light perfectly laid out on the ground and decided to capture the image from inside the room. It is included in my portfolio because it is a unique photo with no moving people or background interruptions.
